How to transition to a static/reserved DHCP address?

I have a device that was given ip address 1.2.3.4 via DHCP. I subsequently added a static reservation for its mac address (copied from the active leases table!) with an ip address outside the DHCP pool. But it seems to keep renewing the old address, and the pi-hole DHCP server seems to let it! I confess that I am inferring this from external evidence, and haven't done a sniffer trace.

Is there something I need to explicitly do? Can it be done without touching the device?

Have you tried restarting the device?

This did seem to correct itself eventually. Perhaps it was just a reboot.
